Families with ASD is very excited that we will have a couple special guests at our 2012 Autism Expo. We met them at the Vintage Thrift Store Sidewalk Sale. Bear was very charming and talented. His owner, Bruce, was so very kind to offer to bring Bear to our 2012 Autism Expo, so families could get to meet him and see all the wonderful tricks he can do. Here is their story.
Bear & Bruce's Story
Bear is my dog. He is a mutt. In fact, he is 75 pounds of mutt. He is a cross between an Irish Wolfhound and a St. Bernard. He was an accident. This story describes how Bear came into my life and then entered so many others.
It begins with some teenagers just setting out on their own who decided a puppy would be cute. It turned out the teenagers had difficulty taking care of themselves let alone a puppy. After a brief time the puppy was abandoned. My wife and I fostered the puppy while we desperately searched for a home. In the end we realized that Bear already had a home, ours. Bear became my Christmas present.
Bear was troubled when we received him. He was shy and insecure. We began working with him to repair the damage inflicted by his original owners. Then I lost my job. I was out of work for a long time. Depression set in. Wife, bless her heart, suggested we take Bear to visit a relative in a nursing home. As we visited, the magic Bear worked with the patients travelled up the leash and worked on me. Watching old hands stroke and play with Bear and faces light up was amazing. The first time we left the nursing home I realized the I had not saved Bear. He, with my wife's help, had saved me.
