These children are referred to MRDD by their local school districts, because they have special needs that cannot be met with a typical classroom setting. The major emphasis of the school age program is promoting the independence of each student to the maximum extent possible. Community participate is stressed with the ultimate goal being eventual job placement. Students in this program also benefit from occupational, physi-cal, and speech therapies, and have access to hydrotherapy in an indoor swimming pool, as well as adaptive physical education and vocational training. Once a child graduates from the Wildey School Age Program (or from a local school district), he or she has the opportunity to do much of the same things typical young adults experience:going to college, getting a job, gathering further vocational student, etc. For someone who has a developmental disabilities, it can become necessary to enlist the help of many in order to reach maximum independence.

Trent is an autistic man who is an artist, general clerk at Meijer, and lives a full independent life with supports. He lives next door to his Uncle Craig. Jason his assistant/friend, lives with Trent. Trent has a job at Meijer, a retail store for 6 years working in the Pets Department and stocking shelves. Trent likes to ride his bike and walk and care for Katie, his Golden Retriever. His favorite outings are going to movies, shopping for Nike shirts,and most importantly exhibiting at fine art shows. Trent’s favorite movies are comedies with these actors, Martin Lawrence, Adam Sandler, and Jim Carrey.
Trent’s friends include Jason his roommate, other artist friends, and his two brothers, Todd and Travis. Trent Altman is an expressionistic abstract artist working in acrylics and mixed media collage on canvas. He reaches within and shares his creations with you. Trent’s paintings display an emphasis and commitment to the process of art making over and above the product. As you experience his work, you will notice freedom of expression, movement, and energy through the multiple methods he uses in applying paint and collage materials. With each piece, you will see and sense avenues of moods and emotions. The viewer is drawn into the wonder of the how, what and why that brought the piece to life. For Trent, the process of creating rises above all else nourishing the mind, heart, and soul.
